Piece by Albrecht Hirche and Kathrin Krumbein

»Do you come from a broken home, or did you have a halfway shitty childhood? Do you live in markedly asocial conditions, and have you managed to pick up at least a couple of utterly distasteful habits? Bravo! Praise yourself heartily! For then you are a potential candidate for the ›bad acting program‹ of the Mahagoni Theater, which celebrates its brilliant revue of the worst scenes, the most overpowering losers, and the dirtiest jokes…

Life is hard. Only the best make it to the top. Work on yourself, enhance your charisma, and trust the power of community. Those are the slogans under which the human being is conditioned into a career machine, a process for which a successful self-portrayal is of the greatest importance. Whether in the office, in the supermarket, or on the political stage, self-portrayers populate the everyday world, bad actors everywhere« (Michael Freundt, Berliner Zeitung, 09.02.1999).

The Mahagoni Theater is one of the most important independent groups of Germany. In the 18 years of its existence it has worked with a series of directors, among which Albrecht Hirche, himself also an actor and author, counts as one of the most important. Mahagoni consists of a core of six members to which further actors are added.

For Bad Actors, presented so far in Athens, Berlin, Hannover, and Hildesheim, Mahagoni received the Förderpreis (Promotional Prize) of the Freie Theater Niedersachsen (Free Theater of Lower Saxony) in May of 1999. For the coming autumn the group has been invited to the famous Impulse-Festival of Nordrhein-Westfalen and to Zurich.

Bad Actors, cultivating bad taste with a wink, is a high point of the Live Art-Style of the late 90s. It is difficult in the face of such brilliantly bad theater not to lapse into unrestrained euphoria.
