Vom Gesamtkunstwerk zum entgrenzten Theater (From total work of art to delimited theatre)

Experts discuss as to the festival theme 2006 the use of music on the theatre stage today and the »operisation of the theatre«. It is not only the former boundaries between spoken and musical theatre that have vanished. With the integration of film, documentary material and performance elements, and with the nullification of the traditional relationship between the audience and the stage, we are experiencing a trend towards a theatre where boundaries have been removed.

les ballets de ci de là

Les Ballets C. de la B., a collective of Flemish choreographers, was created 20 years ago through a friendly co-operation characterised by mutual interests. The company was founded by Alain Platel in 1986 and has since worked to create pieces and established a new style of theatre in Europe. At home in Flemish Ghent, Alain Platel has made a particular mark on the group, although there are always other choreographers working within the company as well.

unseen blue / Peronellas Fass

amarcord was founded in 1992, by former members of the Leipzig Thomanerchor choir and is now among the world's leading vocal ensembles. Its particular trademarks include an unmistakable tone, strong homogeneity and musical stylistic confidence.

I am … in Concert

A mercilessly comic performance on the world of glamour and glitz. Frans Poelsta and Robert Steijn, known as the »terrible lads from Holland«, take the stage with an oblique number on disco classics of the 70s and 80s.

Avignon – Cour d’honneur et champs de bataille (Avignon – Court of Honour and Battlefield)

Since its foundation in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Avignon festival has grown into one of the most significant theatre festivals in France and one of the most famous in the world. Every July, the modernity and radicality of its performances ensure provocation, enthusiasm and critique.

Theremin

Russian physicist Leon Theremin invented the first electronic musical instrument in the world, which was later named after him. Hotel Pro Forma – Denmark's biggest experimental theatre group – abstracts a century of life in this production by Kirsten Dehlholm, under the eerie tones of the theremin.

People are trying to scale an imprecated, magic mountain. The new, emotionally gripping dance-music-theatre piece by Belgian choreographer Alain Platel, between ecstasy, exclusion and humanity. The music by Fabrizio Cassol is based both on »Vespers of the blessed virgin« by Claudio Monteverdi and on gypsy music. (followed by audience discussion on both days)

Concert d’eau pour jardin d’hiver (A concert of water for a winter garden)

An entertaining water symphony with six actors in the pool. Bubbling and gurgling takes place in the relaxed, extraordinary atmosphere of a winter garden. Mélodie Théâtre comes to Germany for the first time, from northern France. For children (from the age of 4) and adults

Cage Up 2

A comic performance between cabaret and concert. Modern music specialists Cornelia Melián (soprano) and Sabine Liebner (piano) dedicate a fast-paced, fantastical piece to composer John Cage. (followed by audience discussion on both days)

Ashura

A scenic concert by Mustafa and Övül Avkıran about expulsion and being a foreigner. In the light of the political background, folk songs in several languages and full of heartrending beauty take on a meaning far beyond their own. (followed by audience discussion on both days)

Grimo Opera (Make up-Oper)

A piece for three voices from Lithuania, about the true face behind the makeup. Based on interviews from lifestyle magazines, Antanas Kučinskas has composed various episodes. In addition to the young Birutė Mar, the production also shows internationally renowned Oskaras Koršunovas.

Hugo Wolf Projekt

A dance piece about the worlds of young feelings. Hans-Werner Klohe has choreographed a brilliant quartet across all genre boundaries, to music from the 19th century, with pianist Anne Le Bozec, Paris, baritone Christoph Sökler, Stuttgarter Staatsoper, and dancer Veronica Cendoya, Barcelona. Roncsolt Kópia (Scratched Celluloid)

Musical drama about a sensitive chapter from Hungarian history – the collaboration with Nazi Germany. With composer Benedek Darvas, Béla Pintér has created fascinating images in the style of black and white film and, due to the taboo topic, triggered vehement discussions in Hungary. (followed by audience discussion)

Miss Very Wagner

A monologue by Charlotte Engelkes, Sweden's star of experimental theatre. Feminine behaviour is represented through female figures from operas by Richard Wager, in a storm of unbridled enthusiasm – with the music of Wagner in a modern collage by Willy Bopp. (followed by audience discussion on both days)

Dok.Tor

A critical and amusing piece by Elena Isajewa, on the health service in provincial Russia. High drama between glasses of vodka and rusty instruments, in a musical production by the celebrated Wladimir Pankow.

Velma Superstar

A musical performance subtly and humorously parodies the mechanisms of events culture. The »supershow« plays theatrically with the expectations of a concert, whether rock or classical. The famous Swiss electropop band involves approx. 40 citizens of Leipzig in its venture.
