The piece »Wolf (or how Mozart came across the dog)« by the Belgian director Alain Platel creates a choreography of song, dance, acrobatics, parody, slapstick, violence, political demonstration and poetry – a realm of senses such as can rarely be seen in theatre. Since its premiere in Duisburg in May 2003, it carried its triumphal procession through Europe’s major cities.
The presentation with music by Mozart leads to the archaic »Clash of the cultures« conflict: the difference between raw and cooked; between savagery and domesticity; between unrefined voracity for life and cultivated, subdued lifestyle patterns. Platel creates a suburban scenario, where 15 dancers and singers enact love and hate and their political statements about international and war sensations.
Alain Platel, born in Ghent in 1956, up to now has made guest appearances at the euro-scene Leipzig with four pieces: »La Tristeza cómplice« (»The shared sorrow«, 1996), »Bernadetje« (1997), »Iets op Bach« (»Oddments on Bach«, 1998) and »Allemaal Indiaan« (»Everyone is an Indian«, 2000). Also, over the years, his competition »Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo« (»Best German dance solo«) has linked him to us.
