The city deep beneath the earth: two young men are stuck together on the underground. Alone in the compartment, they begin an innocuous conversation about pastimes. However, something keeps bringing back to inexplicable similarities. Neither wants to disclose details from his life and yet there is an uncanny intimacy between them.

A grippingly humorous play à deux and a parable on Belarusian society. Inside the underground, the two men are drawn closer at a frantic speed and yet they remain standing still; a turning point in their lives – metaphors for the changing circumstances in the country and the inner workings of the soul.

Sergej Girgel, who was born in Minsk in 1976, began by studying history and has directed in television and film. He has composed a number of pieces and summarises well the sense of time in the post-communist years. Sara Tokina (née: Volha Saratokina) was born in 1983 in Polazk, completed her directing studies at the Belarusski gosudarstvenny teatralno institut (Belarusian State College of Arts) in 2007 with the diploma production of »Staliza around« (»Capital all around«).

Respublikanski Teatr Belaruskaj Dramaturgii was founded in Minsk in 1990 in order to create a forum for the country’s young authors. In addition, it also plays classics and has been managed by Valery Anisenko since 2000. The theatre, which has won a number of national and international awards, has made guest appearances at numerous festivals in Europe.
