Tatiana Julien belongs to the current generation that gives French dance a new face, reflects it pointedly and questions social contexts in a philosophically critical way. Her solo piece SOULÈVEMENT (Uprising) is dedicated to the history and present of revolt, uprising and resistance, of departure and visions since 1968. What remained of the utopias? What discourses, ideas, freedoms? How to dance since then? What is dreamed about, and with whom?
Julien grew up listening to the music of pop star Mylène Farmer. She lets herself be cheered by thousands while she sings her super hit GÉNÉRATION DÉSENCHANTÉE, the anthem of a “disillusioned generation”: “Everything is chaos. My ideals – worn-out words”. To the live recording, Julien sets the scene: powerful, combative, quick-witted. A power woman, and yet alone. Other sound recordings, including those of Martin Luther King, document the spirit of optimism from the time of the civil rights and student movements in Europe and the USA.
Today, activists like the Occupy movement are fighting, but they are encountering an increasingly fragmented society in which new dance styles are emerging on the Internet. Carried by solitary Sturm und Drang, conflicted between individualism and a desire for collective action, Julien puts all her daring into choreographies she borrows from the online game Fortnite, hip hop and krump. And the audience? Riddles with. Are we still a community today when we dance together or watch a play at the theater?
Before both performances, there will be a German-language introduction to the play with Laurent Dréano – director of the Maison de la Culture Amiens and co-producer of SOULÈVEMENT – at the back of the foyer: Nov. 6 (7 p.m.), Nov. 7 (5.00 p.m.).
CAUTION Stroboscopic effects are used on stage.
