Cinematic highlights from the work of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker

In 1983, the Flemish choreographer reached a turning point in her work: »Rosas danst Rosas«, a company danced itself and thus made a statement which had an impact on subsequent productions. It not only had an impact on the ROSAS Company, it has influenced the whole of the European dance scene. The play »Rosas danst Rosas« is still considered to be »revolutionary« today. It was extremely popular at the 2nd Leipzig euro-scene in 1992 and is still a much cited guest performance at the theatre.

How has the work developed since then? What choreographic stylistic devices, what topics have characterised and characterise Keermaeker’s work since that success?

A video lecture will examine the milestones in the history of the internationally renowned ROSAS Company from its beginnings to the present day. With its piece »Rain«, the Company will finally be staging a live performance in Leipzig again after 10 years. The piece »Rosas danst Rosas« – in the stage version as well as in the 1997 screen adaptation by Thierry De Mey – is of particular significance in this context. The film has attained cult status in the meantime, not least because of the location: it was shot in the RITO School of the famous architect Henry Van de Velde in Leuven/Belgium.

Dr. Janine Schulze, born in Bielefeld, graduated in Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft (applied drama) in Giessen. Apart from other work, she has lectured at the Universität Leipzig and Mainz, at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Palucca Schule in Dresden. She has managed the specialist library, the Tanzarchiv Leipzig since April 2000.
