»Parsifal«, the last opera of Richard Wagner (1813-1883), premiered in Bayreuth in 1882 and is full of religious motifs. The parable-like message, namely the salvation and regeneration of humanity through mercy, finds its embodiment in the questing »pure fool« Parsifal, the beautiful Kundry and the suffering Amfortas.

The Italian experimental director Romeo Castellucci brought »Parsifal« to the state at the Brussels opera house as a surreal nightmare. He approached the »stage consecration festival play« as a flickering vision of doom and created images of feverish intensity.
