The incapacity for love and the lack of contact of the modern person are the topics of the film »L’eclisse« (»The eclipse of the sun«), which is set in the suburbs of Rome. Vittoria comes from a humble background and coexists in a loveless state with Riccardo, a young embassy official. However, she leaves him and meets young stockbroker Piero, who generates the hope of new love for her. Nonetheless, her monosyllabic relationship ends in scepticism, emptiness and desolation as they are connected not by love but only by forlornness.
Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007) is one of the principal film directors of Italy. He has made over 20 films and numerous short films. »L’eclisse« won the Jury prize at the Cannes film festival in 1962 and forms a trilogy with »L’avventura« (»The adventure«, 1960) and »La notte« (»The night«, 1961).
