“Le sacre du printemps” (“The Rite of Spring”) is the most important ballet of the 20th century. It was premiered exactly 100 years ago in Paris in 1913 and became a great scandal due to its unusual nature. Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) created with its music – composed for the Compagnie Ballets Russes and choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky – a key work of the modern age.
euro-scene Leipzig has put together three of the most innovative choreographies of the moment in very different styles for one evening:
David Wampach focuses entirely on Stravinsky’s theme and rhythm in his disturbingly humorous duo “Sacre” (“Sacrifice”). Tero Saarinen, a major figure on the international dance scene, combines dance and multimedia art in his outstanding solo “Hunt” (“Jagd”), shown 171 times in 32 countries to date. And Georges Momboye, figurehead of African dance, and his 12 dancers spiritedly fuse Western modernism and African rites.
