»The piano is possessed by the devil. From within, with the wooden intestines lit up, played by magic hands, whacked, shifted about – a dreadful old squawk box that clatters across the stage with moaning and groaning like a bad spook and, in the process, elbows the two grand pianos aside which, after all, are still manned by human piano players. A nightmare in concerto« (Tanja Rest, Frankfurter Neue Presse, 20.12.1997).
A rousing bustle in which a tenor plummets head-over-tail into a water tub, where flamenco is danced, where beautiful ladies disrobe themselves and where it rains piano keys. And finally: Maitre Santos’ pathetic kow-tow paying homage to the distinguished Maitre Bach before the former plays the latter’s music on the piano not on one – after all, that’s easy, anyone can do that – but on two pianos simultaneously. A vivacious, tricky, relaxed approach towards Bach full of cheerfulness and southern charm.
The Spanish pianist Carles Santos, born in 1940, devoted himself 10 intrinsically linking music with experimental theatre. His marvellous musical interpretations, mated with an almost overindulgent scenic fantasy, make him an exceptional performance artist of the contemporary theatre. He composed numerous vocal and instrumental works, for instance for the Olympic Games in Barcelona and for the EXPO in Seville (both in 1992), for the cinema and for theatre productions. Countless invitations led him to all large European cities and his guest performance in Leipzig is the first in Germany’s new federal provinces.
