En Atendant

»Autumn crocus« – The dim light of the dying day creates a sense of suspension. The means are minimalistic: a bare stage, four musicians and eight dancers. The dancers fall, writhe, search for something to hold onto, get up again and fall anew. A mute, harmonic chaos prevails, irritatingly erotic, between life and death.
The dance piece »En Atendant« (old French: always, immediately, soon, waiting) takes a journey through time to its origins in the 14th century. It was originally performed in the city of Avignon in southern France where the popes once ruled for a few decades. The social, political and religious strongholds began to crumble and the plague stormed through Europe. The musical style Ars subtilior from the same era stands in stark contrast to this. A complex form of polyrhythmic structures and improvised designs creates an expressive acoustic pattern that feels close to contemporary music.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, born in 1960 in Mechelen, is one of the most outstanding choreographers of the present. She presented her first production »Asch« in 1980 in Brussels, followed by »Fase« in 1982. In 1983 she founded her company ROSAS, which she introduced with »Rosas danst Rosas«, one of her greatest successes to date. Numerous works followed, such as »Drumming« in 1998 and »Zeitung« in 2008. Her precise, abstract »minimal dance«, especially to the music of Steve Reich, inspired generations. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker gives guest performances all over the world with her company. She was guest of euro-scene Leipzig with »Rosas danst Rosas« in 1992 and »Rain« in 2002.
»A rare beauty is found in Anne Teresa’s choreography and her understanding of dance that we encounter as both the memory of happiness and as the prospect of a future that may be happy« (Karl Regensburger, ImPulsTanz, Vienna, 14.12.2011).
