»Drop Dead Gorgeous« plays in a landscape that is burned down and destroyed by people with rifles, bombs and hate. Six people run and dance, talk and lie, hide and reveal themselves in this landscape. They attach themselves to one another and tell one another their stories. People fall in love with one another in a place where it seems to be women’s task to give life and where it seems to be men’s task to take life. They evidence humility and greatness and liberate themselves from the lies that they use to master their daily lives. The defy their own ignorance and lack of character and try to overcome their rage.
This piece is the first that the British newcomer worked together with the Polish theatre »Dada von Bzdülöw«. These are two extraordinary representatives of physical theatre on the way from autobiographic to political theatre. At the same time, the two cultures encounter one another having different traditional and religion roots and moral codices. Absolute contrasts form the post-war development of both countries. In »ddg«, people who are formed by the society they grew up in encounter one another, although they are willing to overcome that and search for a human future. »As individuals and nations, we are the product of what happened and we are the seeds of what will happen« (Charlotte Vincent).
The choreograph Charlotte Vincent completed her studies cum laude in English literature and drama at Sheffield University 1989. At the same time, she studied contemporary dance, release technique (with Joan Skinner and others) and contact improvisation and she founded the Vincent Dance Theatre in 1994. As a dancer, she has worked with the Dance Republic and Volcano Dance Theatre. Her last productions »Caravan of lies« and »Falling from the high rise of love« caused a national and international sensation. We decided to invite »Drop Dead Gorgeous« to Leipzig not only to present the company’s latest work, but also in the search for ways to contact one another between the individual and social body. After the premier and the first tour through Great Britain, this piece is coming onto the continent for the first time.
