In a lonely house on the coast of a Latin American state lives the neurotic Paulina Escobar with her husband. She had to suffer merciless tortures during the military dictatorship some years ago. When her husband brings a guest, Paulina believes she recognizes in the accidental visitor her former torturer and rapist …
The thrilling film “Death and the Girl” by the well-known French-Polish director Roman Polański (“Rosemary’s Baby”, 1968, “The Pianist”, 2002) is based on the play by Chilean Ariel Dorfman (premiered London 1991). The title goes back to the string quartet of the same name by Franz Schubert (Vienna 1826), which Polański ingeniously incorporates into his film.
