Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943), painter, sculptor and stage designer, was one of the most important artists at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. He was blacklisted from 1933 onwards. The chemist and entrepreneur Kurt Herberts let him and other artists who had been labelled »degenerate« work in secret at his lacquer laboratory in Herberts’ paint factory in Wuppertal. This is also where »Das Lackballett« (»The lacquer ballet«) was created and only performed once, on 06.12.1941 – the 75th company anniversary. After 77 years of silence, the Dusseldorf Theater der Klänge revived the hidden treasure on the occasion of the Bauhaus centenary. The six figurines that had been passed down were newly interpreted.
J. U. Lensing, born in Dusseldorf in 1960, is a composer as well as theatre and film director. He studied composition at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen from 1981-87 and was a master student with Mauricio Kagel at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne in 1987. In the same year, he founded the Theater der Klänge in Dusseldorf as an independent music and dance company, which he has been directing up until the present day. J. U. Lensing has been a professor for sound design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund since 1996.
euro-scene Leipzig showed »Das Triadische Ballett« (»The triadic ballet«, 1922) based on Oskar Schlemmer in a choreography by Gerhard Bohner with the Bayerisches Juniorballett München in 2017.
