Ein Theaterstück

Power, violence and manipulation determine our everyday life – intellectually or in practice. The limits are blurred from artist to actor, from game to terror. Living room, detention hospital or stage? The rules are unclear, the order of the direction, the laws of the theater begin to crumble, and suddenly lunatics or anarchists seem to be on the stage. Do we all need an alibi for our own game?

»Every audience member«, in the words of Meg Stuart, »creates his own semantic fields from the presented attractions.« Each person must decide how much reality he represses, endures or perhaps enjoys. The reality, brutalization and impoverishment of society as fiction that makes us victims of our own obsessions.

»Alibi« was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen in May of 2002 and was not described as »the most distressing production of the festival« for nothing (Leipziger Volkszeitung, 22.05.2002).

Meg Stuart, born in New Orleans, USA in 1965, was a member of the Randy Warshaw Dance Company in New York from 1986-92. In 1994 she founded the dance group Damaged Goods in Brussels and displays her pieces, which always hover on the border between dance and theater, on countless tours throughout the world. Among her latest productions are »Splayed mind Out« (1997), »appetite« (1998) and »Highway 101« (2000/01). Since the fall of 2001 she has been working with her company as »artist in residence« with Christoph Marthaler at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. »Alibi« was worked out in a livestock auction hall and is as pugnacious as it is one of the most important European plays of the last season.
