ANY ATTEMPT WILL END IN CRUSHED BODIES AND SHATTERED BONES

With these words, China’s President Xi Jinping commented on the demonstrations for democracy in Hong Kong in 2019. Jan Martens takes this and other street protests as an opportunity to translate the struggle for democracy, freedom and civil rights into a coordinate system of spatial norms and patterns of movement.

MISERICORDIA

Emma Dante from Palermo tackles the theme of motherhood and delivers a poignant tribute to women and their ability to love and fight. An ode to mercy and the cohesion of three sisters and a disabled boy they have taken in and care for together.

SOUL CHAIN

Inspired by strong emotions about love, SOUL CHAIN combines ballet and electro to an enthralling contemporary dance performance. The 17 dancers become a swarm full of energy in an extremely challenging choreography that won the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2018.

THE GHOSTS ARE RETURNING

GROUP50:50, a collective of artists from Congo, Switzerland and Germany, tells the story of seven pygmy skeletons that a Swiss doctor brought to Geneva from Congo in the 1950s. On stage, singing and dancing, a ritual develops for the seven spirits – in the hope that they will find peace.

TEATRO AMAZONAS

This piece is about the systematic exploitation and destruction of the Brazilian Amazon and thus of the habitat and culture of the indigenous peoples living there: from the arrival of the first European adventurers over 500 years ago to the current government of Jair Bolsonaro.

SULLE SPONDE DEL LAGO – AM UFER DES SEES

SWAN LAKE, based on the music by Tchaikovsky, is one of the most famous works of classical ballet and thus also representative of a certain body image. Together with the dancers of the mixed-abled FORWARD DANCE COMPANY, Swiss choreographer Alessandro Schiattarella takes a critical and personal look at the iconic ballet. What is considered supposedly “normal” or “beautiful”? What mechanisms of exclusion and oppression lie hidden here?

MY LAND

Seven of Ukraine’s most talented young circus artists rise from a soil-covered stage to talk about their love for and devotion to their homeland. | Вони були на гастролях у Франції, коли почалася війна: цирковий віртуоз і шестеро віртуозів з різних регіонів України, які зібралися разом у Будапешті у 2018 році.

UBUNTU CONNECTION

A new format initiated by euro-scene Leipzig. 16 different artists from dance and new circus perform with and for each other on stage. With live music, they conquer the space in a battle from round to round and create the UBUNTU CONNECTION together with the audience. The inspiring approach of “Ubuntu” embodies the longing for a constructive attitude based on respect, empathy, participation, change and hope. UBUNTU CONNECTION encourages a decolonial shift in perspective.

THE PROCESS

The sensitive narrative accompanies fifteen-year-old Claire through the days in which everything is at stake for her: she learns about her unplanned pregnancy. We experience her doubts, her thoughts, her feelings, her anger and her inner impulses when reflecting the options of abortion or keeping the baby.

SAVUŠUN

The solo piece SAVUŠUN (means mourning for the death of Siavash, a legendary Persian prince) by Iran-born Sorour Darabi combines reminiscences of Shiite rites that pay homage to a religiously determined willingness to sacrifice with Darabi’s own experiences with gender role-playing, questioning identity, toxic masculinity, grief, fear and suffering.

MENTIRAS APLAUDIDAS

Three performers and two musicians take us on a journey through today’s urgent topics with their clashes of civilization, political and ideological beliefs, fears and uncertainties.

MARIN / SCHRÖDER

With DUO D’EDEN (1986) and GROSSE FUGE (2001), the Leipzig Ballet presents two classics from the oeuvre of the great French dancer and choreographer Maguy Marin for the first time. Ballet director and chief choreographer Mario Schröder creates a world premiere to the music of the contemporary French composer Pascal Dusapin, thus creating an additional surface of friction between his movement language and Maguy Marin’s choreographic work.

DIE GESCHICHTE DES STREETDANCE

With breathtaking dance scenes and interviews with important contemporary eyewitnesses, the two-part documentary tells the story of the global triumph of so-called street dance.

MAGUY MARIN – L'URGENCE D'AGIR

She is one of those artists who dig deep – the lasting furrows shake lives. For more than 40 years, Maguy Marin has been establishing herself as a major and irreplaceable choreographer on the world stage. With her work, the daughter of Spanish immigrants happily and angrily slaps barbarism in the face.

THE TIME FOR DENIAL IS OVER

In the discourse program THE TIME FOR DENIAL IS OVER, GROUP50:50 invites African and European thinkers to explore the restitution movement with films and discussions.

DANCING IN TIMES OF WAR

Despite all the destruction caused by the Russian war of aggression, many Ukrainian artists still find the strength to continue working. In this discussion, we ask about the place of art and culture during the war. | У нашій розмові йтиметься про становище культури та мистецтва в часи війни. Як почуваються українські мисткині та митці в Україні та поза її межами?

PRO TRAINING & WORKSHOPS

In cooperation with 4fT Tanzplattform Leipzig, we are offering professional training sessions and workshops with festival artists during our festival week. Participants have the opportunity to experience an exclusive first-hand insight into different dance techniques and artistic working methods.

In cooperation with 4fT Tanzplattform Leipzig, euro- scene Leipzig shows the dynamics and innovative power of the independent dance scene in Europe in short performances and presentations. STUDIOTRADE is a European network that supports research, creation and exchange.
