Requiem pour L. (Requiem for L.)

The famous Belgian director and choreographer Alain Platel created this theatrical concert based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s requiem, which remained unfinished at his death in 1791 at the age of 35. The composer Fabrizio Cassol reworked the piece with a modern approach. With six singers and eight musicians from Congo, South Africa, Brazil and Europe, an intercontinental dialogue on death emerged.

Böhm

Karl Böhm was one of the most important conductors of the 20th century. In his magnificent monologue, Nikolaus Habjan – puppet builder, puppeteer, director and performer – dedicated himself to this artist, who was a willing servant of National Socialism. In his solo effort, Nikolaus Habjan plays an indeterminate study with eleven characters and puppets – ludicrous in his acrobatic speech, humorous, extremely earnest and with virtuosity.

Double

This dance piece represents a poetic crossover of different cultures. The dance couple Juliette Colmant und Nono Battesti, the jazz singer Dyna B and the musician Quentin Halloy show us sensual fireworks of dreams, desires and fears in a colourful landscape between hip hop, tap dance and African folklore.

Deveta (The ninth)

Ludwig van Beethoven’s ninth symphony is one of the most popular works in classical music. The Slovenian director Bojan Jablanovec created a performative commentary on this epitome of humanism together with five performers. He poses questions about the power of music and its misuse. The musical lustre flows into naked individuals who take on the form of horses.

Ich pfeife auf die Oper (Double meaning in German: »I whistle an opera« & »To hell with the opera«)

Nikolaus Habjan brings a buried treasure from our culture back to the surface. he has created a virtuously whistled evening with popular opera and operetta arias from the last three centuries by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini and Johann Strauß, among others.

Die Schachnovelle (The royal game)

»Schachnovelle« (»The royal game«) is the most famous work by Stefan Zweig, one of the most important and popular 20th century authors. In a Vienna occupied by the German army, Dr. B. was arrested by the Gestapo and brought into solitary confinement in 1938. A stolen chess book develops into his only chance at survival. Geirun Tino dramatized the eponymous novella with seven actors.

Remnants

Patrick Eakin Young staged a mesh of vocals, electronic music, dance and sound recordings. The piece with four singers and a dancer is based on the memoirs of the Croatian/American author Courtney Angela Brkic and the disturbing history of her family in the Bosnian war.

Une histoire de la musique (A history of music)

One day long ago, in the caves of the Stone Age, music emerged. Straight through the centuries, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the birth of the opera, Bach, chansons and electronic music followed. Three performers play over 50 roles and change among numerous instruments and costumes in an instant. This piece by Richard Navarro enchants both children and adults.

Duo con piano – Tanzstück für zwei Pianisten (Duo con piano – dance piece for two pianists)

A man and a woman start an expressive dialogue and dance for each other, next to and on the grand piano. Rarely has one ever seen dancers who can play such good piano, and pianists who can dance so well. In an abstract way, they speak of intimate artistic and human togetherness.

Állomás (The station)

Two mysterious characters appear at a mysterious venue. Brothers, friends or bound together by fate? Ferenc Fehér, the piece’s choreographer, dances this intense duet with Dávid Mikó about departing and arriving, life and death.

Scandale (Trip hazards)

A shaman, but maybe also a magician or samurai, manipulates a group of six people. Mythology and abuse of power go hand in hand in his case – he is the musician, personified music. The French choreographer Pierre Rigal devotes himself to hip hop in an original connection to other dance styles such as break dance, popping, crumping and clubbing.

Der Tod und das Mädchen (Death and the Girl)

The enthralling film »Der Tod und das Mädchen« (»Death and the maiden«) by the famous French-Polish director Roman Polański (»Rosemary’s baby«, 1968, »The pianist«, 2002) is based on the theatre piece by the Chilean Ariel Dorfman (premiered in London in 1991).

Oberon, König der Elfen (Oberon, or the elf king’s oath)

Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) is best known for his opera "Der Freischütz" (1821). "Oberon" was premiered in London in 1826.

Die Räder im Getriebe (the wheels in motion)

Stage technology is usually a secret and invisible to the audience. One pays attention only to the stage design, music, lighting effects.

Tanz oder Musik zuerst? (Dance or music at first?)

Gianfranco Celestino and Annalisa Derossi offer insights into the process of creating their dance concert »Duo con piano – Tanzstück für zwei Pianisten« (»Duo con piano – dance piece for two pianists«).
