The Sophiensaele in Berlin Mitte opened in September 1996 with the world premiere of ALLEE DER KOSMONAUTEN. Since then, the choreographic concept has been considered legendary and has had over 150 performances worldwide, including nearly 80 in Germany. For the 25th anniversary of the piece, Sasha Waltz comes to Leipzig for the first time ever for a guest performance.
The center of the action is the living room couch of a prefabricated apartment in Berlin-Marzahn. Feelings and movement impulses of a three-generation family accumulate here in precarious proximity, can only be either buried in lethargy or exposed to the feedback effect of their cramped living situation. The choreographic examination of this squatting and clashing unravels solutions and develops an uneasy comedy from the lack of tenderness. ALLEE DER KOSMONAUTEN belongs to a series of early projects by Sasha Waltz that explore the movement worlds of everyday life as a space for dance interpretation. Created on the threshold of a new age, the play tells of the era of living together without a back door and has a surprising topicality in the year 2021.
Sasha Waltz is an icon of the German dance scene. The dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests was founded in 1993 by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig in Berlin and presents approximately 70 performances per year worldwide from its current repertoire of 12 active productions.
The performance on November 5 will be followed by an onstage audience discussion with Sasha Waltz. Moderated by Peter Korfmacher, Head of the Culture Department of the Leipziger Volkszeitung.
On November 5, we will show the film SASHA WALTZ – A PORTRAIT at Passage Cinemas.
