Introduction and conversation: Nikolaus Habjan, Vienna, and Ann-Elisabeth Wolff, Leipzig

The beautiful princess Salome, daughter of Herodias, is desired by her stepfather Herod. But she is only interested in the prophet Jochanaan (John the Baptist), who is held captive at the court. Herod wants to grant Salome every wish if she dances for him … and she demands the head of Jochanaan to finally be able to kiss him.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) created a masterpiece with his opera “Salome”. It was premiered in Dresden in 1905 and, along with “Elektra,” represents his most modern stage work. Nikolaus Habjan gave the main characters Salome and Jochanaan each a puppet at their side, which expand their scope of play strikingly.
