One primarily associates the name of the painter, sculptor and stage designer Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943) with the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. His creations after the destruction of the Bauhaus by the National Socialists and their categorization of his work as »degenerate art« from 1933 onwards are less well known. In financial trouble, he accepted a position at Dr. Kurt Herberts’ paint factory in Wuppertal in 1940; lacquer paints were tested here. This is where Schlemmer created his last works. Unfortunately, plans for a »lacquer cabinet« with wall and ceiling panels as a gesamtkunstwerk were not realized for economic reasons.
In addition to the guest performance »Das Lackballett« (»The lacquer ballet«) by the Theater der Klänge, Dusseldorf, seven photo prints of lacquer pictures will be shown in a small exhibition before and after the shows.
