Object-theatre by Michael Laubu for adults and children

Potatoes, wood, fruit, material – nature bestows an abundance of gifts upon us. A man, a table and small figures that gradually appear to develop lives of their own. In poetic-comical pictures, objects approach each other and assume a strange relationship to each other on the thin line between the motionless and the living.

This magical short piece from and with Michel Laubu belongs to the strikingly different theatrical events of last season. Laubu creates a world, which, in this age of over-stimulation, is probably only possible on stage: a world of fantasy. Without language and without technical expense, he manages to grip the audience – adults and children equally.

Michael Laubu was born in 1961 in Creutzwald (near Forbach). While still a child, he made objects out of cardboard and tried his hand as a little musician by using all kinds of materials. His first piece with objects and puppets was performed in numerous schools in 1979. In 1981 Laubu began studying stage design and drama at the university of Nancy and took an interest in oriental theater forms.

With »Le poulailler« (»The Henhouse«), he created a »travelling theater« piece which took place in a suitcase and also led him through several German cities. In 1985 he founded the object theater, Turak, which appeared throughout France, as well as in many other European countries and added approximately one new production and changing cast per year. The last two productions »Nid de galets« (»Nest of Pebbles«) and »2 π R« were sold out for four weeks at the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris at the beginning of 1999.
